Best Fall Trends from NYFW (and How to Style them Yourself)
Attending New York Fashion Week is every fashion blogger’s dream. If you’re in the industry, it’s likely that this is one of those things you have on your “goal list” for the year. Sadly, I had to come to the realization this Fall that I would not be able to attend. Although I had secured some great invites (a good sign for next season), when planning our wedding in Canada and our honeymoon following, I didn't leave much time in between to reset and take more time off work to head to New York. Instead, as Oliver was recovering from surgery that week and I was running around like a helicopter Mom checking his heartbeat every five minutes, I stalked social media for any sign of Fashion Week. Essentially I lived through my favorite blogger’s glamorous Instagram stories as I ate apple cinnamon Cheerios on my couch. The FOMO never felt so real.
One advantage I had to kicking it at home with my baby bear was that I got to see all angles of the chaos and glamour. From live shows to the street scene, to the after parties that went into the mornings, I got to see what everyone was wearing. While there are definitely some trends right now that I could live without (hi, micro sunglasses, Dad shoes, and neon anything), I fell in love with quite a few that I feel like we can all steal some tips from heading into Fall.
1. Feminine Frills
From flowy skirts to high collared necks, the feminine frills were everywhere. If you’re like me and don’t want to spend a fortune on a new Fall wardrobe, this is a huge advantage! You can use some of your pretty Spring and Summer pieces and pair them with an item that’s a little more season-appropriate like tan suede boots to transition.
2. Satin Dresses
This might be my favorite trend for the Fall. Satin dresses are so chic and sexy and I love that they look like you just dressed up your nighty (I mean, you could though, right?) Pair a simple satin dress with a cardigan, knee high boots, or even a fashion-forward blouse underneath, and you’re set to go from day to night. For Fall, I love the cream, grey, and earthy tones.
3. Animal Print
This is an obvious Fall trend that I don’t see dying out anytime soon. Leopard is a must for this season if you want to make a bold statement. I love how eye-catching it is, no matter how or where you wear it. In my everyday life, I love a classic pair of pointed toe leopard pumps, and a scarf. But, I’m not going to lie, I’ve definitely been eyeing up the full animal print dresses and snakeskin boots as well!
4. Mini Bags
Gone are the days of the oversized and overstuffed purses. Now, all we need is our phone, wallet, and maybe a lipgloss (ok, definitely a lipgloss). Less is more, and in this case smaller is better. We are all about simplifying these days, so it makes sense that we would be obsessing over these tiny little bags that we can grab in an instant and carry on our wrists. My favorite are the mini bucket bags and the O-Ring purses, and there seems to be an endless amount to choose from in Fall colors right now.
5. Plaid
Just like animal print, plaid is an obvious must-have for Fall. I will say though that I think the trend for plaid has shifted recently in a more chic, upscale kind of way as opposed to the “farm girl” look. Needless to say, this makes me love it even more. My favorite way to wear plaid this season is with black leather and feminine details.
6. Over the Knee Boots
What can I say about over the knee boots? They are effortlessly sexy, and truly can be dressed up or down. My 2 favorite combos are a mini skirt with a blouse, or ripped jeans with an oversized sweater. Last year they were huge during Fall and Winter, and I don’t expect this season to be any different. My recommendation is to find a classic pair of over the knee boots that is a solid neutral color and either leather or soft cloth so that you can pair it with anything.
7. Belted Waist
The belted waist trend has come back, my friends. I feel like it is the trend 2.0 and is definitely more creative and sophisticated than it used to be. I love the belted waist with a chic fanny pack or just a thick velvet ribbon. I actually just purchased a thin Gucci belt dupe online for Fall that I know will be perfect with oversized sweater dresses (linked below).
8. Earthy Tones
The mustard yellow, rich green, and burnt orange shades have been catching my eye on the runway and in New York streets this season. They stand out without being too bold and bring a bit of warmth to any outfit. These shades almost remind me of a neutral for Fall and I feel like they can be paired with anything.
9. Sleek Suiting
The fashion world is giving us a major lesson in sleek office wear. Bonus - the trend isn’t only for the working woman; it can be easily transitioned into the evening and weekends with a sexier cut. If you want to ease your way into this trend, try out a blazer dress or tight-fitted pantsuit.
10. White after Labor Day
This is another one of my favorite trends, but mostly because I’m already breaking the whole “no white after Labor Day” rule every year already. Some of my favorite Fall looks are head to toe white because they stand out so beautifully from the Fall colors. If you haven’t purged your closet yet for the season, this trend is totally for you. All you have to do is pair one of your favorite white outfits with a cute Fall bag or pair of booties, and you’re all set. Just make sure that the fabric of the white piece is season-appropriate so you don’t just look confused. My favorite white piece for Fall is a pair of corduroy pants I got on sale from Loft!
