What to Wear to Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving style inspiration

Can you believe that Fall is already almost over? It seems like the best season of the whole year lasts only 2 seconds, and yet the Winter drags on for 2 years.

Is anyone else with me?

The fact that I have only consumed 2 pumpkin spice lattes up until this point is shocking. Even more shocking is that I’m seeing Christmas trees and decorations go up this week on many of my favorite Instagram accounts.

If you’ve been following along for some time, you know that I love Christmas. So, I’m not going to pretend that I haven’t been carefully planning out how I want to style our fireplace mantel and new fluffy, fake tree. However, I’m not sure that I’m quite ready to welcome the grey and snowy days just yet.

It’s a well-known fact that Fall is pretty much everyone’s favorite season - from the colorful falling leaves to apple picking, pumpkin spice everything, Halloween, and Thanksgiving - it’s kind of hard to beat.

Now, I’m going to share my unpopular opinion with you because I trust that this is a #judgementfreezone. Here it goes: I have never really liked turkey… or any traditional Thanksgiving food for that matter. I also don’t really care for watching football all day, or the chaos and stress that comes with trying to get everyone out of the house at the same time. Therefore, all of my life I kind of dreaded going to Thanksgiving.

The only thing I looked forward to was getting dressed up for the occasion and seeing my cousins.

For reference, the last time that I actually went to our big family Thanksgiving, my niece and nephew had such a meltdown that, within 30 minutes of arriving, my sisters and I decided to leave with the kids. We ordered a McDonald’s feast on the way home and followed that with an all-night Kardashians TV marathon. To be honest, it wasn't so bad.

For the years that followed, I would usually skip Thanksgiving all together and opt for a hike with my Dad. Last year we explored Westminster, went to the movies, and ate Mexican food in the back of a convenience store. It was unconventional, to say the least.

However, being away from my family now in a different state means that I don’t have the luxury of actually seeing them all the time. Needless to say, this is the first year in a long time that I’m actually looking forward to the holiday and not trying to fast-forward my way to Christmas.

Sam and I will be heading back to the city and staying with his family for a few nights while bopping around to see my family, our new niece, and friends. I’m so excited that I started styling outfits for our trip a month in advance. That’s not excessive at all, right?

I have already decided that this shawl is going to be one of the stars of our 2019 Thanksgiving tour. It is ideal for hiding a food baby after a big meal, and feels like I’m wearing a cozy blanket without the guilt of staying on the couch all day.

Pair this shawl (or any of my favorite picks below) with skinny jeans or leggings. Then, add a cute hat, boots, and some lipstick and you’ve got yourself a chic, yet cozy Thanksgiving look.

I’m linking my favorite shawls, sweaters, chic leggings, boots, and accessories below!

My 2 tips for strategically choosing what to wear to Thanksgiving:

1. Make sure the fabric is soft and forgiving. You’ll most likely be wearing it all day while lounging, eating, traveling, etc. so your top priority should be comfort. Like I said above, a shawl or sweater, and leggings or soft denim is ideal for this.

2. Start with a simple outfit and spice it up from there. Use a hat, dainty jewelry, and lipstick to dress up your look without throwing comfort out the door.
