The One Summer Trend I'll Never Wear (+ 4 That I Will)
ICYMI: We are picking up our lives and moving to a new city next month! I also chopped more than 16 inches off of my hair, bought a new SUV, and switched my whole wardrobe to solid black. Okay, okay that last part isn’t true (OBVI; #blushpinkforlife). My point is that a lot of things are changing around here - including the season.
Because of our big move, I’ve had to become very selective about what I’m keeping in my closet for the warmer weather this year. Not surprisingly, packing your entire wardrobe into small, cardboard boxes makes things very clear in regards to what trends you’re loving at the moment.
Although there are some trends that I wish would stick around forever (looking at you: high-waisted denim), there are also a few that I’d be happy to see out the door, like yesterday (please leave: Dad sneakers).
While I was catching up on one of my favorite blogs, Pineapple and Prosecco, Danielle got me thinking about the latest fashion trends and what I’m looking forward to most this season, and more importantly, what I’ll be avoiding at all costs.

Floral maxi dresses
I swear one day I’ll just have an entire closet dedicated to maxi dresses (sorry, Sam!). If I could slip into one every day of the week, I would without hesitation. Maxi dresses are one of those rare pieces that make you appear perfectly put-together with very minimal effort. And, although the florals’ claim to fame is technically Spring, I wear them just as much in the Summer months. You simply can’t go wrong with a feminine floral print.
This dress has been sold out in white since last year, but it is still available online in red and black! I’ve linked some similar styles below as well (a lot of them are under $40).
Over-sized sun hats
When it comes to sun hats, I say the bigger the better. I love obnoxiously large hats in the Summer to block out any chance of sunburn on my face. They are a classic staple for the warmer months, and a must for any beach day or vacation.
Block heel sandals
Ah, Summer. When you can wear open-toe sandals without your toes turning purple and falling off; the blissful months. I look forward to this season every year when I can break out my cute, flirty sandals with pretty colors and funky designs.
I love block heel sandals because they work well for a daytime look when you’re trying to stay more casual while remaining cute. Take this strawberry picking activity for example; I didn’t want to commit to high heels on a Sunday morning at the Farm… but I also couldn’t bring myself to dress down enough for sneakers or flats. Block sandals were the perfect in-between for this sweet maxi dress.
Round sunglasses
Fun story: when I purchased these glasses a couple years back, the sales associate that was helping Sam and me told me to stay away from any round sunglasses (these in particular), because my face was “already really round”. When I tried them on, she practically screeched “Noooo” into my ear, saying that they just weren’t flattering on me. I smirked at Sam and told her to ring them up.
Round sunglasses are my absolute favorite (I’ve worn them on the blog here, here, and here). I love the fun, vintage design and how they walk the line between over-sized and micro style. They generally aren’t sporty or high-maintenance, so they work perfectly for any casual activity day-to-day.
Now, the 1 trend that I refuse to wear: Neon (anything). The last time I wore neon was in high school for a black-light party and I’m pretty sure that I spilled Jagermeister all over it within the first 10 minutes of arriving. Needless to say, neon doesn’t exactly “spark joy” for me, if ya know what I mean.
I know bloggers and celebrities that can 100% pull it off without looking like a cheap hot mess but, for my brand? It’s gonna be a no from me, dawg *Randy Jackson voice*.
