What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
Looking at these photos for the first time immediately filled my eyes with tears. It’s something about seeing us together as a family after praying for a baby and having him on my heart for so long.
In the quiet moments that happen periodically throughout my day in between changing diapers, trying to cram in my entire ‘to do’ list while he naps, making dinner with him riding along on my hip, and seeing his entire face light up as Sam walks in the door from work, I pause and marvel at the fact that I am his Mom.
Sometimes I picture Sam and I from 10 years ago when we first started dating and I smile knowing how far we’ve come and who we are today as parents. Despite the fear and anxiety we had about taking this huge leap of faith when we began trying to conceive and the hurdles we’ve had to overcome since, I can’t imagine London not being in our lives now.
Getting photos taken may seem frivolous and unnecessary to some people, but taking a moment to pause and celebrate this moment as a family of 3, as new parents that have survived (and, honestly, thrived during) the first 5 months, and capture the visible joy he has brought into our lives, I feel is something worth remembering.
Over the long holiday weekend, we were able to squeeze in a family session with Alisandra Photography at a local beach in Williamsburg, Virginia, during sunset. The early Fall breeze made itself known in the days leading up to our photoshoot, so I felt that it was the perfect time to style some transitional pieces for the occasion.

With the golden glow of sunset, the earthy tones of the beach, and the casual nature of our location, I wanted to choose a set of 3 outfits that were effortlessly paired and represented the coziness and warmth of Fall.
In comparison to our newborn photos (read my ‘style guide’ here), I decided to go with a relaxed mood for this shoot as opposed to dressing in traditional formalwear. We began with my outfit since I am notoriously more particular about what I’m wearing, and we built from there. I wanted texture in the mix, so I decided on a brown faux leather mini skirt with a flowy white top, cream booties, and dainty gold jewelry.
If you’ve been following along for awhile now, or just happen to glance at my Instagram feed, you know that I’m not much a fan of bold colors or patterns. However, since there are now 3 of us in the photos, I didn’t want us to blend together in a sea of beige. So, instead, I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to add in a navy blue and white plaid button-down shirt for London to become the focal point of the photos.
From there, we completed the outfit trio with navy blue slacks for Sam to match the plaid of London’s shirt, and a rich cream Polo shirt to tie together the brown, white, and tan from mine and London’s separates.
My biggest piece of advice on choosing several outfits for family photos is to have a color scheme and mood in mind. A secret Pinterest board with saved inspiration can also help with this.
Having one person in formalwear and another in a casual outfit can throw off the vibe and look confusing in photos. Additionally, you don’t want more than 1 bold pattern or color as to not clash and overwhelm the eye when searching for a focal point.
Now that we have covered the basics, let’s get down to shopping specifics. Today, I’m sharing outfit ideas for Mom, Dad, and baby to bring together a Fall photoshoot you will cherish for years to come.
