What to Wear for Newborn Photos
Congrats, Mama! If you’re reading this post, I think it’s safe to assume that you are either pregnant or just had your little one. Between the late nights, sleepy smiles, and tiny toes, you have found some time for newborn photos. Now, the question is: what should you wear?
Luckily, I just did my own newborn session with Jade Nikkole Photography in our home, so I may have a tip or two on what to wear (and what not to wear).
We decided to do an indoor and outdoor session just like our maternity photoshoot, and although I styled both of them very minimally to keep the focus on our sweetest new addition, I still put a lot of thought into the outfits we chose.
For me, being only 3 weeks postpartum and getting adjusted to my loose belly and engorged boobs, I wanted to feel comfortable above all else. Newborn photos aren’t a great opportunity for skintight dresses, crop tops, or pieces that are bold and distracting.
You want these photos to be timeless, so it’s not ideal timing to try out a new trend. Your new baby is only going to be this little once and you probably won’t get a do-over, so your best bet is to keep things fairly safe and simple so you can happily look back on these photos in the future.
Personally, I prefer white dresses for big milestone photos like these, but I also think that light pink or blue would work well for a newborn shoot if you are looking to add in some color. If you do choose a color for yourself, make sure that your partner and newborn are in colors that compliment you and the environment you are in to reduce clashing.
Don’t worry - I included outfit ideas for Dad and baby below as well!
My two biggest takeaways for dressing yourself are: order your outfit(s) while pregnant so you’re not scrambling at the last minute while tired and busy with a newborn, and choose pieces that you will feel comfortable in (loose-fitting most likely) and be happy to look back on in 25-50 years.
Below, I am linking my outfit from our newborn photos, plus timeless dresses that would be perfect for showcasing your newest family member! I have also rounded up some great shirt options for Dad and neutral outfits for baby.
