Our Nursery Tour
Two things that I have always dreamed about (and kept substantial Pinterest boards for) have been my wedding and our nursery. Many years before I spotted those not-so-faint blue lines on a pregnancy test, I had envisioned what our nursery would look like for our sweet baby boy or girl.
It wasn’t long after Sam and I bought our first home that we found out I was pregnant. Thankfully, at that time we hadn’t fully decided on the layout of the rooms or decorated significantly. The only items in the now-nursery were my office desk and a rolling rack for styling outfits.
When I started designing our nursery, I imagined myself watching the sunrise in the corner of the room in a comfy rocking chair, reading bedtime stories and standing over his or her crib with Sam as we whispered goodnight. I wanted this room to be calm and minimal while still feeling lived in and homey.
The first item we got for the nursery was a gift from my parents that my Mom and I snagged on Black Friday. We started with a classic white crib from Pottery Barn Kids and I fell in love with it the moment we walked into the store. I knew that it would be the perfect piece to kickstart our room design and that it would go with any theme we decided on.
Once we had the crib, choosing the rest of the furniture and decor was fairly simple. Since we found out that we were having a boy, we settled on a neutral color palette with a hint of light blue to bring some color into the room.
Knowing that I would be spending the most time in this room, I wanted to make sure that our nursery would be a place that I felt comfortable in.
Throughout our house, our design style has been minimal, neutral, and bright. With light cream walls and furniture/decor that consists of woven, leather, wood, and linen fabrics, I knew that I wanted our nursery to match the rest of the house so that everything flowed together easily.
The thought of having a dinosaur or truck themed nursery with bold blue walls and green accents truly made my stomach turn. Just because we were having a boy didn’t mean that we needed to overhaul our design style for a newborn that couldn’t care less.
Once he is older and wants a say in how his room looks, that’s when I’ll have to let go of my aesthetic control and let him get creative.
Until then, this is mommy’s space, mmmk?
My favorite design element in the entire room (and arguably the house) is the white shiplap accent wall that Sam installed. We purchased the wood and trim from Home Depot and Sam was able to finish the entire project in 2 days flat. It added a focal point to the room and gave it that tiny hint of farmhouse style that I love so much.
From there, I added a distressed wooden bead chandelier to compliment the style of the shiplap, a cream rocking chair, white framed full length mirror, felt llama mobile, “jetaime” metal sign, wooden frames featuring our maternity photos, and lastly a light blue vintage style rug to go in the middle.
I kept my styling rack in the room to highlight some of my most loved clothing of his, continued the wooden theme with mini hangers (in color-coordinated order of course), and organized the dresser drawers with clothing bins and labels for each size and style.
The nursery has already filled our hearts with so much joy. As I watch our baby boy practice tummy time in the mirror, nurse him in my rocking chair, and retire his onesies as he grows out of them each week, I feel reminded of how quickly this season is passing and I want to soak up every moment.
I know that as he gets older the memories made in this room are going to become sweeter and sweeter. I’m so happy with how everything turned out and feel like my vision has been brought to life.
