Feminine Plaid for Apple Picking
Have you checked off your Fall bucket list yet?
A few weekends back, a group of my girlfriends and I decided go apple picking. It was my third year at Larriland Farm, and it continues to be one of my favorite Fall activities to date. I truly can’t think of anything that helps me embrace this season more than when I’m walking through the Orchard in plaid while making plans for a homemade apple pie.
I know that since Halloween has passed, everyone has skipped onto the next season already in their mind. However, as the year is coming to a close, I personally like to savor these last few months as much as possible and take some deep breaths before hanging wreaths and blasting my Christmas playlist.
We still have Thanksgiving to look forward to this month, so I wanted to bring you babes some outfit inspiration for the remainder of November. Today, I’m using a Fall staple that you probably already have hanging in your closet: plaid.
Now, I have to make note that this isn’t just any plaid look. I wanted to share some tips for styling a feminine plaid outfit. I stayed away from plaid for a long time because I was convinced that it didn’t fit into my personal style aesthetic. Typically, the bold red, green, and yellow pattern would make me run in the opposite direction because I could only picture it with torn jeans, Daisy Dukes, or overalls.
How very naive of me, right?
When I finally decided to give it a shot, I figured out what I had been missing the whole time. I needed to pair one plaid piece with a few other things that are more in line with my comfort zone - specifically light colored and solid, to elevate the whole look.
My plaid piece was this mini skort (yes, you read that right) from Forever 21 that is currently on sale for less than $20. I love the vintage feel of wearing a skort, and it was especially practical for reaching into the trees while picking apples and goofing off with the girls. This specific one is almost sold out online, so I’ve linked some similar ones at the bottom of this post at the same price point (including this one - which may or may not be in my shopping cart at this very moment).
p.s. I wore another Forever 21 plaid skirt here that unfortunately sold out within days of sharing, but I have linked some similar styles in that post as well.
For this look, I paired my skort with a cozy pink sweater that I snagged in Vancouver during our honeymoon, and my vintage Prada over the knee boots (which I obviously linked a fantastic dupe for at a fraction of the price).
I even took it a step further and paired the outfit with a pretty wool beret (I have this one in pink and white). Berets are my favorite way to add a quick feminine touch to any outfit, and they are on my list of top 5 wardrobe staples I refuse to live without.
Although this look is Fall-inspired, the dark color of the plaid skirt and over the knee boots would be perfect for transitioning into Winter as well. I’m picturing a wool coat (camel or pink) layered over top, a cozy teddy coat, black fur, or a varsity bomber jacket if you really want to make a statement.
