Making a Statement in Tulle
Have you ever put on an outfit and thought that maybe you should just wear it for the rest of your life?
When I styled this gorgeous pink skirt with a bow-tied crop top and jewel-covered heels, I thought, “this is ME”.
If I had a spirit animal in the form of clothing, tulle would be it. The fabric is so feminine and flirty, and I can’t get enough.
Last month when I decided to partner with ChicWish, an online women’s clothing boutique, I was overwhelmed with the large selection of gorgeous tulle skirts. They seem to be ChicWish’s signature item as they grow more popular! Once I had my hands on this pink layered piece, I knew I had to make it the focal point in our annual holiday photos. Forget the newly married couple, look at the TULLE! (lol)
Our plan this year was to shoot early in order to give us time to design, order, and mail out Christmas cards before the holiday itself, but has that happened yet? Absolutely freaking not. In true Hartman family fashion, our cards will most likely arrive in the hands of our loved ones sometime in, I don’t know, February? I guess since they’ll be seeing the photos on here first it won’t really matter anyway… but, I digress.
We shot these photos during my girls’ weekend in DC last month. Sam drove up extra early on Sunday morning so that we could catch the breathtaking view of the Jefferson Memorial as the sun was rising and no one else was around. The temperature was arctic and I felt a little bit like a lunatic for wearing a strapless crop top, but I knew the end result would be worth the following day’s head cold. Sam and I twirled on the steps, cuddled in close, and whispered jokes into each other’s ears about getting Shake Shack on our way home. It was our third year in a row shooting at a DC monument for our holiday photos and it was truly a morning to remember.
Possibly the reason why I love this skirt so much is because making a fashion statement is one of my favorite things to do. For instance, a few nights ago I went to a holiday event in Baltimore and I wore a sequin, tulle gown with red lipstick, over sized crystal earrings, and sky-high heels. It was a Wednesday, ya’ll. Most people would have thrown on a sweater, some nice jeans, and pumps and called it a night, but not this girl. If I’m getting ready for an evening out (especially over the holiday season), I fully commit myself to dressing the part.
My theory is that wearing tulle is a guarantee that you’re about to have the best night of your life. It’s not one of those things you can throw on and hide away in the corner of an event wearing. You are making the conscious decision to be bold, happy, and drink some damn champagne.
Another reason why I’m obsessed with this skirt: it’s under $75, but also because it reminds me a whole lot of Carrie Bradshaw. Ya’ll know how I was just talking about my vision of waking up as her in my fancy-schmancy suite in DC last month? I’m now convinced that I really am her. Has Sex and The City been based on my life this whole time? Is Sam really Mr. Big? Kidding, kidding. Maybe.
My point here is that every girl needs a tulle skirt in her life. There are so many ways to style it for each season and occasion, from a cropped sweater (I LOVE this one) and belt to a satin tank and blazer, or a chic strapless top if you’re feeling extra fancy. You could even wear it with a cute graphic tee and white sneakers for a laid-back, cool girl look, if that’s your style.
