Rain Gear for the Style Obsessed
They say that Spring showers bring May flowers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish during this rainy season.
I used to have a love-hate relationship with Spring. Although I knew the dull weather would bring my favorite colorful blooms, I always felt like I couldn't get dressed up or look cute in it. I would dread getting out of bed when I could hear the pitter patter of the rain on our windows, knowing that a full day of water-soaked flats and soggy jackets were in my future.
As silly as it sounds, I had hoped that if I didn’t invest in a good raincoat, rain boots, or umbrella, that it just wouldn’t rain.
I refused to search for cute pink pieces because I didn’t want to give into the idea that I would be embracing it. I had also assumed that all rain gear was as dull and boring as the weather.
The first time I fell in love with a rain coat was last Summer during our honeymoon in Vancouver, Canada. We were heading to a whale-watching tour later in the day, and I didn’t realize until we got our itinerary that we were supposed to wear waterproof clothes. Clearly, I had not packed any.
We were downtown that morning shopping when I stumbled into a tiny boutique after seeing a blush pink top on the mannequin out front. Once inside, I saw something I didn’t think was possible: an ultra-feminine, bright pink raincoat with a bow in the front to tie. Immediately, Sam saw my face light up and encouraged me to try it on.
I kept going back and forth, once again not fully wanting to embrace rain gear, so I told Sam we should keep shopping around. We popped into the next store on the block when Sam told me he had a work call he had to take. When he came back to meet me 10 minutes later, he was holding a shopping bag with the pink raincoat inside, grinning ear to ear with his cleverness.
To this day, every time I put my rain coat on it reminds me of our incredible honeymoon and whale-watching excursion, rather than how much I used to dread the rain.
Since last Summer, I have loved my pink coat so much that I decided to invest in a pair of cute and colorful rain boots, and a nice umbrella to go along with them. Now, on days like today when I hear the rain outside my window, I actually feel excited to slip into my favorite, carefully-curated pieces!
